This is starting to feel a lot more like Will it Snow for Christmas than Thank You. Which should be a bad thing, in my books, since I thought Christmas was a bagful of nuts. But somehow it isn’t bad. Sure, there is heaps of determined self-loathing, bloody-minded self-punishment, and the familiar mid-story psychological game-changer. But somehow Nice Guy feels organic, even believable, in its own way. Is this script truly less crazy than Christmas, or is it the highly skilled execution that continues to mask its faults? I couldn’t even say, but I can’t wait to keep watching.

I didn’t watch Thank You so I can’t compare, but I do agree that Will it Snow went crazy in the middle. Though I did end up finishing it. On the bright side, it did have a quietly hopeful ending, so that gives me some hope that NG might not end with everyone going down in flames. Though the developments in ep 10 make me nervous.
I am probably alone in this sentiment, but I actually hope that the ending is so tragic that it will cause an ocean of tears to be formed from all the wailing that its fans will do. I hope the ending will pack a punch and be meaningful and unforgettable.
I don’t want tragedy for tragedy’s sake, and I don’t want Lee Kyung Hee to go completely loony (*cough*ALoveToKill*cough*). But I do want something with a big impact.
I may or may not be a masochist.
I’m usually a proponent of happy endings, but in a drama like this I’m more concerned with the ending being meaningful and making sense with the plot. Which is why the way things are going is making me nervous, because I feel like with the new developments a happy ending might not make thematic sense or have any believability.
But on the other hand, if everything goes down in an orgy of pain and death, then why all the suffering and struggle of the characters? Like you said, I feel like it would be tragedy for tragedy’s sake. Honestly Maru and Jae-hee are so monumentally screwed up in the head that they might be better off dead, but I want Eun-ki’s hope to be validated at least in some way. She is such a fighter and she tries so damn hard. An ending with rainbows and kittens would be ridiculous, but I’d like to see a somewhat hopeful ending for her.
My guess? Jae-hee will commit suicide or go to jail or something, and Maru will end up sacrificing himself for Eun-ki in some way or another. Eun-ki is starting to be held up as this Beacon of Goodness, which is very annoying to me (seriously? Should’t this trope have died along with Dickens?), but following that thematic stream, then it makes sense that Maru would do something drastic for her, especilly since he’s exhibiting signs of major protectiveness towards her. That, or she’ll end up having something truly awful happen to her, or decide to sacrifice herself IN THE NAME OF LOVE! Yeah, pretty messed up. But this is Lee Kyung Hee we’re talking about.
And honestly…I wouldn’t mind Eun-ki having a terrible ending. I, er, am not overly fond of her.
Haha I don’t mind Eun-ki, but I did like her much better pre-amnesia. I enjoyed how reckless and twisted and vengeful she was – definitely not a Candy-tyoe heroine. But with this new her after the accident I feel pity but kind of in a detached way. Her actions in episode 9 were so WTF to me than I can no longer feel as much empathy for her.
I don’t know if I agree with her being a Beacon of Goodness – she did attempt suicide-murder, and she’s the one to blame for her current state. I think it’s more like a Beacon of Innocence, which now must be protected by the other characters. But I’m not a fan of characters as stand-ins for ideas rather than people, so yeah, not feeling that.
And the trope of sacrificing oneself IN THE NAME OF LOVE needs to die a long overdue death in kdramas. Too bad it will never happen.
