So, I finally finished watching Answer Me 1997. I know, I know, I’m late to the party. But life has been busy, and I was never completely captivated by AM1997 anyway. Mind you, I did enjoy it. Its young actors have spades of charm, and they are either shockingly talented for rookies or have been brilliantly directed (a bit of both, I reckon). The show knows its purpose and its target audience and it unashamedly and unblinkingly goes for the sentiment and tone that its audience appreciates, without insulting its audience’s intelligence (Thank You, Show!).

But this being quite the focused piece, ever mindful of its purpose, it doesn’t entirely connect with me, the me who is not its target demographic. Once it got into facile “Lessons of Life”, coupled with over-cute and faintly desperate Let’s-Tie-Up-Loose-Ends! in its final lap, I lost quite a bit of interest. And I certainly am not the only one who got tired of its WHICH-BROTHER?!-THIS?!-THAT?! tricks, which were so manically excessive, the whole threesome thing gave me unintended creepy vibes.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the final episodes. Largely because it was just so fun to see Shi Won blossom in her full glory, confidently and hilariously hogging centrestage and swatting aside every Romantic Female Lead Stereotype that threatened to sneak up on her in adulthood. This was a case, for me, of Character Development sustaining my interest even when I had some time ago checked out on Plot.

Well done, Little Drama that Could. Well done, Jung Eun Ji, surely this year’s surprise break-out actress. Well done, writers and PDs, please keep putting in real effort. It makes such a difference to us viewers when you don’t take us for granted.
